Hi there!I'm Dave April - Computer geek, Family Man, Camera Fan... |
|
I slave away at work on behalf of my lovely wife Dina, and our 2 fabulously intelligent, attractive, and well adjusted children Samantha and Zachary. When we're not busily preparing for potential disasters, we keep busy with lots of fun activities. Zach, Samantha and I participated in the FIRST Lego League this year - an amazing program aimed at introducing boys and girls aged 9 - 14 to technology and engineering through the programming of autonomous Lego robots. Our team took home a trophy for teamwork at the Illinois State Tournament! Samantha & I are in Indian Princesses together. We go camping and canoeing. This is a wonderful program for dads and daughters. Her Indian Princess name is "Rose Petal". I am "Swims with Fishes". |

We have a dog, Macintosh, as well as our Persian cat, Stan. I'm a cat person. I don't like animal saliva all over me. Mac started out awfully cute as a puppy although he has now grown into an 80 lb monster.
Dina is the only Jewish Republican astrologer I know. She's also the Midwest Regional Director for the Jewish Reconstructionist Federation and she teaches classes in Jewish Spirituality.
Here is my resume. I work for an exciting company - Syclo LLC - as a C++ software developer where we are doing really cool work creating remote access tools for wireless data products like smart phones, PalmOS devices and WindowsCE/PocketPC.
Before joining Syclo, I had a diverse 10 year career at Ameritech, where I climbed up poles and down manholes with my Cable Repair crew, designed and maintained CAD Drafting and Geographic Information Systems for our Outside Plant Engineering organization, participated in a 2 year fellowship at Northwestern University's Institute for the Learning Sciences studying artificial intelligence under Roger Schank and building multimedia educational software, and last year was part of the design team for Ameritech.net as a member of the Human Factors and Media Prototyping group.
My passion is digital photography. I use the Canon EOS 10D & Nikon Coolpix 4500 cameras. You can see some of my photos in my gallery.
I have also like geocaching - a high tech sport using handheld GPS units to find stuff people have hidden all over the world! I have logged most of our geocaching adventures. The April family was also featured in a story about geocaching in USA Today!
Because I am a computer geek, a lot of what I do at work is fun for me at home as well. I ran the Jimmy Buffett Parrot(t)head Page from 1993 - 2001.
I like to SCUBA dive, but I don't go nearly enough. I became very adept at losing money on ETrade for a while.
I like to read. If you're looking for some reading recommendations, try any of the following:
- Barry Hughart's Bridge of Birds is undoutedly one of the most fun books I have ever read.
- Anything by Ken Follett, especially Pillars of the Earth
- Anything by Terry Pratchett
- Any of the Harry Potter books.
- A few years ago, I finally read To Kill a Mockingbird as part of the One Book, One Chicago program.
I have done a fair amount of web site development (who doesn't these days) besides the work I did for Ameritech.net - mostly small sites, but I like to think that I am able to produce all elements of a site - content layout, graphic design, dynamic content generation, programming, multimedia elements, etc.
