Architectural and mechanical details of the Quadracci Pavilion and the Brise Soleil on the new expansion building of the Milwaukee Art Museum. The Brise Soleil is a giant (110 ton!) movable sunscreen that looks like 2 huge gull wings when extended. The giant screen can be opened or closed in 3 minutes! When closed, the wings fold over the oval roof of the pavilion. When opened, the wingspan extends over 210 feet wide.
I grew up in St Louis and was always fascinated by the Gateway Arch - this new building, designed by Santiago Calatrava, may be my new favorite.
