Our first cache that we hid is the Heron's Crossing cache. We selected Cuba Marsh for the location, an open area preserve in southwest Lake County, Illinois. It's an interesting place to visit throughout the year as the vegetation looks markedly different throughout the seasons.

The main paths throughout are wide gravel trails. It is less visually interesting to walk along these paths, but it is the easiest way to get around and more condusive to leashed pets and small children. There are many well defined little paths throughout the area as well that take you down near the water or through the fields and piney areas. These are much more fun to explore. At various times of the year, the wetlands are filled with blue herons, egrets, Canadian geese, varieties of ducks and other waterfowl. There are lots of deer in the area, in fact the evening we hid the cache, we saw two does on our way back to the car. |

The cache itself is off the main trail, less than 100 yards. Bring bug spray. The mosquitoes were out in force this evening. There was also a cool anthill, flat, but about 3 feet in diameter near the site. Be careful around the ants. Don't wreck their hill. Normal cache goodies are available - a tin of Altoids, a dollar bill logged on wheresgeorge.com, a few Hot Wheels cars and other trinkets. Sign the log and replace the cache container in the Ziploc bag to keep it as dry as possible. Enjoy the hunt! Bring a trash bag along with you. The area is well maintained, so there isn't a lot of garbage around, but cleanup what you do find. Cache in, Trash out! |
